Recent patent documentation hints at Sony's potential development of augmented reality glasses designed to leverage the processing power of the PlayStation 5 (PS5). While the release of such a PS5 gadget is not guaranteed, Sony has outlined specific and potentially entertaining applications for this technology.

Since entering the virtual reality (VR) gaming market in 2016 with the launch of PS VR, Sony has focused primarily on VR rather than augmented reality (AR). However, a surge in Sony's patent activity related to augmented reality in recent years suggests a growing interest in commercializing AR solutions. The latest indication of this trend is a newly secured Sony patent describing AR glasses compatible with the PS5. These glasses aim to transform physical surfaces into mixed reality environments for users.
The patent details an application where a player curls a piece of paper, which is then 3D-mapped by the AR glasses to create a dirt bike racetrack. Another use case involves a platforming level created from folded paper. The technology can also combine multiple physical substrates to generate virtual playgrounds, as outlined in the patent. This approach differs from the AR headset patented by Sony in mid-2023, which focused on serving as an immersive screen extension rather than a dedicated mixed reality gaming gadget.

The patent suggests that the actual gameplay processing required for this AR technology would be handled by an external system. Illustrations in the patent show examples of the glasses connecting to the PS5 and DualSense, but Sony also notes compatibility with third-party hardware. By offloading processing tasks to a console or PC, Sony could potentially manage production costs if it decides to pursue the development of these AR glasses.
